Marine Biology

Biological Sciences

Biological sciences is the study of life. It is the study of living organisms, their living organisms, their life cycles and environment. Many of the different fields of studies include biochemistry, microbiology, and evolutionary biology. Pay rate for biological sciences? Who do biologist work with? What kind of animals will you be working with in biology? What are the benefits of becoming a marine biologist? Do you travel as a marine biologist? Does biology require a higher education? What environment will you be working in as a marine biologist? How many years of education do you need as a marine biologist? Is this field in high demand?

The pay rate for biological sciences is 31k to 110k yearly. Biologists work with science life professors and enjoy working with people whether it is in a classroom, research lab, the field, or even the museum. I love sea animals and their habitat, so I most likely will be working with the study of aquatic life as a marine biologist. The benefits of becoming a biological scientist include outstanding faculty, strong career outlook, opportunities for research, easy accessible pre health advising, and customize your pre medical curriculum. Marine biology is a field where you would require traveling. A good environment that I would work in in this field is the zoo where there is a field of study just for sea life. You will need a 4 to 6 year college education to get a degree in this field. This field is good in demand.

What benefits will I have becoming a biologist? Biologist have excellent human health and economies. There are many research programs to aim to sustain flow of these services. ‘Stakeholder’ engagement is a good tool to learning what services are a priority to the public and maybe integral to the success to the aquatic ecosystems management due to public participation in planning and decision making can make of broader support such as financial, intellectual, and labor for the management plan. The collection of data may be mandated such as ‘The Clean Water Act of United States’ which requires that bodies of water are classified as fisheries, drinking water, or recreation. Past evaluations with aquatic ecosystems have considered a wide range of factors that influence engagement. They have conducted a critical review of the literature on characteristics of the environment that influence stakeholder engagement and participation with aquatic ecosystems. To their objectives, it was too factors that should be considered in the creation of surveys to help encourage the inclusion and ecological and social beneficials uses data in large- scale water monitoring programs. Factors identified in their review were, “extent and influence place- bas knowledge; proximity to, and frequency of visitation of the resources being considered; basic demographics such as age, gender, education, and income, home community type; aesthetic appeal of the resource; and primary reason for engagement with the resource.” They propose such factors, with subfactors, as a template for their survey development.

As far as the salary in marine biology, Eco friendly crop would sell to chefs, ranchers and farmers. As of early last year 2019, Leslie Booher and Torre Polizzi, the founders of Sunken Seaweed, came down to Ensenada Mexico, and got into the offshore maricultural conference, in all hopes of meeting Paula Sylvia, the port of San Diego’s program manager of aquaculture, to speak about desire to help preserve kelp in California. They did a bunch of research to get started in California and met with other kelp farmers, and regulations in the state, costal conservation groups, the coastal commission and other regulatory agencies that have laws to get into the water to farm. They decided to put things into the water much faster, so knowing Paula would be there, they chatted with her as a receptive idea to advise to move forward and pursue this. Climate change is a marketable item. The mission to create kelp farms to boost biodiversity and create carbon dioxide into oxygen to help improve clean ocean health altogether. Eventually, the goal is to apply the kelp as biofuel, which will leave a smaller carbon footprint. From research, Booher and Polizzi discovered that 98 of kelp forests in CA have died due to climate change. According to spokeswoman Brianne Page, the demand for kelp is significant and the global commercial od seaweed market valued 10 billion in 2015 and expected to reach 22 billion by 2024.

As far as programs for biological sciences, summer is the busiest time and includes several activities. These activities include 4-H youth programs and produce meetings. Three years back, the Arkansas Extension Animal Science Department started offering internships opportunities for students. The internship occurs for 12 weeks with the salary compensation and housing if needed. Money for the internship are provided by both department and Extension director. Applications are accepted in the Spring. Interviews are held for the top 3-5 applicants and then intern selected. Interns spend the summer assisting faculty with youth programs and projects. They are usually not assigned to any one particular, but have good opportunity to gain experience from faculty members. Some notable results in the intern evaluations include: 75% had moderate to large improvement written and oral communication skills and 100% has a large improvement in general knowledge of extension. All interns indicate asks assigned were challenging, but attainable. They thought the internship was excellent and would recommend to others. They are more interested to work for Extension as a result of the internship, and believe the internship is a valuable education. From the perspective of the faculty, it is having an intern that is very valuable. An intern allows for more things to get done in a good timely manner. Suggestions for improvement are for more interns to be hired. Interns are a great way to introduce students to Extension and what Animal Science Department offers.

About animals I will be working with in marine biology. Dolphins are very quick animals. The louder and more elaborate tourist passing, the greater the performance before splashing back down. The common bottlenose variety maybe seen playing catch with clumps of seaweed or working collaboratively in groups to circle in on and whip fish up into the air to eat on. Dolphins spend a great deal of their time fishing and as an adult, may consume up to 30 pounds of more of a fish daily. Dolphins are known to dive as deep as 300 meters deep below sea surface. “Their bellies are built like surfboards”. They readily catch a ride on a bow wave and do so for many years. Ancient Greek sailors believed a dolphin riding in their wake was a good omen for a smooth voyage. Dolphins swim over 40 kilometers per hour. Dolphins can’t always swim the threats they face. Dolphins are quite chatterboxes with wide range of clicks and whistles their hearing maybe the most important asset with technique called echolocation. They have very good sense of smell, so eyesight and hearing are essential for hunt and survival. They can hear frequencies many times more than a human being. Dolphins are not so different from the animal bats. Dolphins are able to bounce high- pitched sounds towards an object and listen for the echo back allowing them to get a map of the environment and find food and navigate direction. Dolphins skin is very sensitive.

I recommend marine biology because it is an awesome salary and even more exciting job to take part in. You can work where there is much ocean and rich marine life so it makes summer and awesome part of your life year round. There are so many different fields of marine biology you can get into. There are so many different aquatic animals to choose from and I encourage college students to really get into the major career for a more exciting teaching and learning experience.

Learning to Speak the Language of the University

ENG 1001- 027

Rhetorical Analysis- Rough Draft 1

10 February 2020

Learning to Speak the Language of the University

In the article “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae, the author says that students at the university have to “invent the university”. He says this because they take many different courses and have to learn how to express themselves in each course. This is part of having a liberal arts education. This can be a problem, because students are required to speak and write before the skill is ‘learned”. David Bartholomae gives examples of four student essays and then analyzes them for the reader. He points out positive and negative things in each essay. The first essay shared was a placement essay that a student wrote at freshman orientation in which the student described something creative that he/ she had done. In the second essay, a student writes about his work as a mechanic and an incident that was important to him. In the third essay, the writer writes about his football team and how he had the idea of changing the kind of socks and cleats he and other players would wear. The last essay shared is when the writer talks about his interest and experiences with music. David Bartholomae mentions the opinion of Linda Flower. She thinks that expert writers should consider the reader when writing essays and be able to change their writing accordingly. He also mentions the opinion of Mina Shaughnessy. She states regarding advanced writers: “The evidence of a problem is the presence of dissonant, redundant, or imprecise language.” David Bartholomae concludes that some students will have to imitate the “distinctive register” of academic discourse before they are able to complete the work. He states that: “Our students must be our students. Their initial progress will be marked by their abilities to take on the  role of privilege, by their abilities to establish authority.”

The question or problem the author addresses is he wants the students writing to speak in his language. The author, David Bartholomae, shapes the content being used to match his intended audience by telling that instead of saying this or that, they can be more specific and add more detail. The author, David Bartholomae’s thesis relates to his purpose by stating that every students’ stories were good, just need to be more critiqued. Key moments in the article, “Inventing the University”, are the stories “Clay Model” and “White Shoes”. Important for “Clay Model” because David Bartholomae says, “the student who wrote about constructing a clay model of the earth is better prepared than is better prepared for his education.” The assumptions the author makes on the reader would be that in the two stories, “Clay Model and “White Shoes”. The student who wrote the “Clay Model” would be a better prepared student than the student who wrote “White Shoes”. There are no problems or contradictions in the article. Nothing really bothers me about the article. I agree with the author that it can be too hard on the student to write in each different subject. A good example is when David Bartholomae states, “A student after the first year or two, must learn to try on a variety of voices and interpretive schemes- to write for example, as a literary critic one day, and experimental phycologist the next.”

The type of structure the author used for his argument would be deductive. The author’s tone is academic, preachy, and casual. The tone supports the authors purpose and meaning. I thought the sentences and vocabulary were easy. The sentence and vocabulary support the purpose and meaning. Yes, there were recurring words that relate to the purpose and meaning. “Every time a student sits down to write for us, he has to invent the university for the occasion- invent the university, that is, or a branch of it, like History or Anthropology or Economics or English. He has to learn to speak our language.” Later he says, “They must learn to speak our language. Or they must dare to speak it, or to carry off the bluff, since speaking and writing will most certainly be required long before the skill is learned.

The kinds of evidence that the author David Bartholomae primarily relies on are personal experience, descriptions, and analytical reasoning. This is shown when the author, David Bartholomae, gives examples of student essays and then analyzes them. The evidence that was the most effective, was the example from the “Clay Model” essay which the author David Bartholomae critiqued. The author relied on assertions rather than on evidence when he talked about reviewing essays. David Bartholomae states: “As I read these essays, I was looking to determine the stylistic resources that enabled writers to locate themselves within an “academic” discourse. My bias as a reader should be clear by now.” I feel the author, David Bartholomae’s quality of evidence is good. The evidence David Bartholomae provides is convincing, because he gives examples of various essays and analyzes them.

In the article, “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae, his purpose was to inform the readers by giving the audience examples of how it is to be a college student in the university and suggestions of how to be a better writer. Me personally, I thought the article was overall very well understandable and interesting. Especially the given point of examples of student writings. The article affected me in a really positive way, such as keeping my focus. The article kept me wanting to read and study more in depth. The article wants to change the reader by making them become a better writer, which will help them to be a more successful student.  I don’t think the articles purpose was “hidden”, or different from the stated purpose, I actually thought it was straight forward. The intended audience was me, the reader and the students of the university. I was very much a part of the intended audience. Assumptions the author makes about the reader’s knowledge or beliefs would be how it interests them and how they organize themselves. The contexts the article is coming from is first person and third person.

What I learned from close examination of this publication was how to become a better reader and writer. Some of the “hidden” beliefs that can be seen within this publication are shown in this quote: “He has to learn to speak our language, to speak as we do, to try on the peculiar ways of knowing, selecting, evaluating, reporting, concluding, and arguing that define the discourse of our community.” The intention of this publication is to teach that every student can be a good reader and writer. They may improve their reading and writing skills by taking their time and focusing on the content knowledge in each different academic class. My overall feeling about this publication is that it is very good. I think this publication exists because it teaches the students that in order to become a successful writer, they must know much of the knowledge that comes within each academic course. A situation when this publication might be read, is when a teacher assigns this to students when trying to teach a class about what it is like to write proper English.

Reflective Essay

Introduction:

Some things I have struggled with this semester are getting the info online from a reliable source. An example would the library we use online at UC. I also struggled with putting the essay in third person. Example would not be using I, me, etc. I also seemed to struggle with getting enough information as well. A good example of this would be the online texts being enough for me to summarize. I think these issues were challenging for me because for one thing, my career has the info on the internet for what its worth. I also think maybe I could have found better sources at UC’s online library but stuck with was first popped up because it seemed to be there and enough. I think they have impacted my writing in some type of way. I think I made my points clear and understandable enough to call them my own piece of writing. I think it made a positive impact overall.I might work with these issues by asking the teacher an advance or evening asking for a peers help before I go home and am on my own.I diffidently changed my point in understanding the essays. I now have a clearer view of what kinds of essays there are and what is the norm for each. I also have to say its made me a smarter person. I struggle a lot with piecing the paper together, so I think getting my thoughts out in a organized manner helps a lot. My strengths as a writer are grammatical and spelling and making sure the paper makes sense. These strengths have been shown in this class by my double over look and corrections before handing the paper in.

Rhetorical Analysis

I learned from this assignment was the excitement of learning the basics of writing. I learned a lot more of the English language I didn’t know before and it gave me a great outlook on the professional way to write. Analysis is different from other forms or writing by telling the audience what is acceptable and what is not. Before you begin to write, it explains much of the professional way to write and why is so important doing so. Analysis is important in analysis papers that you do for school, such as the one we wrote about such as, “Clay Model” which just happens to be one of my favorite writings. I think it plays to be a important form of writing in college profession. I struggled a lot with organization on this one. The main was just getting my words to fit in each paragraph to make sense. I made sure that they do. I did really well on my explanation. I was very clear and correct on my thesis and conclusion. I think I did overall very well on this assignment.

Exploratory Essay

From the exploratory essay, I learned a lot more about my profession and salary. The exploration is different from other forms of writing because it gives a good understanding what your profession is and how much money you will be making. What was difficult about the topic was diffidently the research and finding a proper source in the UC’s library. The exploratory essays function in other types of college essays would diffidently be informational. Id say the exploratory also takes part in educational facts too. I struggled with finding the right kind of info in UC’s library. I also struggled with getting the paper to be as long as I want it to be. But hopefully, all went well. I tried by best and that’s what matters. Something I did really well was the organization of the piece. It pieces together perfectly with making sense which is the best  and most important thing.

Research Essay

What I learned from the research essay was information about how to save our oceans. I learned a lot of the unfortunate problems they have to face and what we can do to help clean them up. This was different from other forms of writing by having a problem and solution. It was also different because we had a thesis and conclusion to the paper. It was difficult to find information by the information not being long enough or not up to date and incorrect data to process into writing format. It was difficult to stick with only one position because you wanted to find out more but could only use one side of information from the rest. Some functions research papers play in college would be using a problem and solution outcome to check over your data. They play a good role in using before and after diagrams to check over your work. I struggled with finding the correct info and enough info. What I did really well was the overall quality of my research and am proud to say that I think all went well. This was an interesting piece and overall I think was important.

Multimodal project

From the multimodal perspective, I learned how to piece my info together through a power point presentation. The multi modal project was different from other forms of writing by using a power point and by using photos, videos, and data to support. The media was not hard to find. I struggled with again the information not being enough or incorrect to use. I struggled with getting my power point to 20 slides but managed to do so by breaking up my information little by little. What I think I did well was using photos, videos, and data. There was a certain limit that was required and I made sure I met them.

Conclusion

What I wish I would have done better was putting my papers more up to date in a more organized fashion. After completing this course, I am most proud of my Rhetorical Analysis paper. I am most proud because for me, it was the easiest one and I believe I did a really nice job on it. My assignments reflect those that I face outside this class are for them to be on word press for others to view and see to learn from. I think I will apply this knowledge to future classes by learning all this information and incorporating it in my future English classes on papers and assignments. My advice is that the way to an easy A is really just to complete the work and make sure you are meeting the requirements while doing the work. I thought I earned an amazing A just by doing so myself.

Research essay- Rough Draft 1

Research Essay

Marine Biology. Marine biology is the study of ocean plants and sea animals. The issue being that there is a lot of over fishing in our oceans as there is over eating sea food and plastic pollution. The background of these studies argues can we change and keep our oceans safe and healthy again? Fisheries management says that there are too many fisheries that over fish in our area that is affecting the species in our ocean. In fact, it is taking away other species lives that we don’t even fish for. There is also a problem in the fish we eat on a daily basis. If the fish is not from a local fishery we should then not consume the fish. The last problem is the oceans plastic crisis that is leading to a problem for not only the fish, but sea bird life as well. If we stop local fisheries from fishing in the ocean, and eating the sea food, and reducing our amount of plastic we use daily, our oceans would be much cleaner and healthier for our sea animals to reproduce again. These arguments provide up to date detail on the problem and what we should do to keep our oceans alive.

Marine Biology has many different problems. But with these problems also come solutions. One of these problems is overfishing. Overfishing causes fishes not being able to breathe and reproduce correctly. Fisheries and their management has encouraged fishermen to catch as many fish as they can without regard to the long term health of the fishery. However, when fisheries institute rights based on management, fisheries become motivated of their oceans.  This works by fishermen getting a secure share of the catch and agree to limits that allow fish populations to rebuild. This as an long term ownership stake, in the share of the fishery that all fisherman can sell or grant to his or her children. When this fishery grows, his stake increases along with his or her profits. A certain right based on fishing called catch shares has transformed fisheries in the United States. Overfishing has dropped 60% in federal waters since 2000. Its better management is providing more stable fishery’s and increased revenue. Since 1970, the artisanal fisheries are being forced to compete with other fisheries from abroad. This has affected the fish population in a very negative way. Illegal fisheries have become a bigger problem. Legitimate fishing is a dangerous job. Fishing labor also plays a big part in transitional labor. The sector has been mostly used by drug traffickers who use boats as mules that awaken coastal communities. Let’s take a deeper look into such fisheries.

Not only overfishing has been such a problem to our oceans, but eating the sea food has too. Weather it was caught sustainably plays a big part in keeping our oceans alive with sea animals. There are many toxins in sea food consumption that we don’t even realize. Also how that sea animal was taken from its habitat. These cause and effects might play big rolls on our family. The biggest threat to our ocean is lack of knowledge. When we consume unsustainable seafood, it affects our oceans in many ways. The most common way is missed connections between our seafood industry, and habitat destruction plastic pollution. Threatened species cause tropic cascade. When a ecosystem loses too many individuals of one of its organisms, the animal then starves. The lost organism is a predators, and as prey populates, the food source of the prey gets low. This is a vicious cycle that can kill off the ecosystem. As to overfishing, it is not only affecting the ocean but it’s people too. Billions of people rely on fish as a source of protein, but with less fish and higher price, this can become a big problem. The biggest solution to this problem is not to buy seafood that is caught by industrialized, unsustainable fishing practices. Ensure the fish you eat is sustainable and locally caught. Fish for the sea food yourself or go directly to the fisher after determination of the sustainable fishing practices. You can ask in person how they catch the sea food they sell. Beware of imported fish, often through industrialized practices. If sea food is apart of your culture or practice, then try marine life for a change and don’t buy sea food.

Plastic waste is destroying our oceans. It is estimated by 2050, oceans will carry more plastic than fish and estimated that 99 percent of sea birds will have consumed plastic. Plastic kills about 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals, marine turtles and many other kinds of fish each year. 80 percent of the pollutions in our oceans comes from land- based activities. Half of the plastic manufactures have been produced in the last 15 years. Nearly 700 species, including endangered, are known to be affected by plastic. Nearly every sea bird eats plastic. There are 5 massive patches of plastic in the oceans around the world. These are big concentrations of plastic debris that cover large swaths of the ocean. A garbage trucks worth or plastic is dumped into the ocean every minute. If this trend continues, 12 billion metric tons of plastic waste will exist in the world by 2050. According to recent studies, scientist agreed that corals that come in contact with plastic have 89 percent chance of contracting disease, compared with a 4 percent likelihood for corals that do not. A microplastic particle is a piece of plastic smaller than five millimeters, but many are much smaller and only visible under a microscope. Microplastic is in fragments, pellets, beads, fibers, and film. It can be made up from a number of different materials with hundreds of different chemical additives.  An average person consumes 70,000 microplastics each year. Microplastics have been found 93 percent of bottled water tested in a world wide study. Microplastic has been found in 90 percent of table salt. Global plastic production has quadrupled over the past four decades. We are producing over 300 million pounds of plastic every year , 50 percent of single use plastics. Plastic takes more than 400 years to decompose. Plastic industry will make 881 billion pounds of plastic, 40 percent of this is thrown away in 20 minutes. Plastic production has increased from 2 million metric pounds in 1950 to 380 million metric pounds. The American Chemistry Council said the US Industry plans to spend 47 billion dollars on new plastic production capacity over the next decade. Currently, about 42 percent of plastic is designed for packaging, which is especially troubling most plastic packaging is designed for single use. In 2019, the production of plastic will add more than 850 million metric pounds of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This is equal to the emission from 189 five hundred megawatt coal power plants. US emission from plastic incineration in 2015 are estimated at 5.9 million metric pounds of CO2e. Emissions from plastic production and incineration could account to 56 gigatons of carbon between now and 2050. That is 56 billion pounds, or almost 50 times the annual emission of all coal power plants in the US. Americans use 200 billion plastic bags a year which requires 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture. Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes but takes up to 1,000 years to degrade in landfills. The average American family takes home 1,500 plastic shopping bags a year, according to Natural Resources Defense Council. According to Waste Management, only 1 percent of plastic bags returned for recycling. This means an average family only recycled 15 bags a year, the rest end up in landfills. The 8 essentials looking up from this crisis are to 1, reduce plastic dependency. 2, increased producer responsibility. 3, increase fees and taxes on pollution plastics. 4, increased waste management where the problem is greatest. 5, implementation of the zero vision for ocean plastic. 6, increased mapping, surveillance and research. 7, stop the flow of plastic waste into the ocean. 8, increased funds for clean up. From here on out, I’m sure we can help keep our oceans healthy, clean, and maintained.

This problem and solution is a good example of logos. I say this is a good example of logos because if we change our oceans cleanliness, it can easily be backed up with data, facts, and statistics. If we change our oceans overfishing, we can easily say that the production of our fish will bloom and that local fisheries will have less fish to carry. We can check these facts by going to local fisheries and checking back on our species. We can also stop so much eatery on sea food that shows a graph of people who quit eating se food and see our ocean animals reproduce dramatically. I think we can also prove that less liter in our ocean is possible by asking ocean cleaners how the liter is on the damns in our ocean and also the health of our animals. The conclusion is that it is a proven fact we can prove through facts that our oceans health is coming along better than it was before if we all choose to do so. By not fishing, eating seafood, or polluting the ocean, we are sure to see an improvement on sea life and our oceans well being.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
